Halted Response

I can do without people who, when walking next to you, suddenly stop when you say something surprising or unexpected. Is it really that necessary to add that much emphasis to the reaction? Can you not walk and be surprised at the same time? I usually just keep on going, they'll catch up when the stupor fades...
